SDG&E’s Data-driven community-based approach to attain grid reliability and sustainability
Description
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, serving 3.4 million customers in San Diego and southern Orange County, has undertaken grid modernization initiatives to accommodate intermittent renewable energy, manage growing DER-distributed energy resources, and enable efficient and reliable two-way power flow. These initiatives require massive data from smart meters, distribution assets and meteorological instruments. Leveraging digital technologies, an innovative approach was taken to maximize the use of this data to support these initiatives. System reliability was improved through advanced analytics and intelligent visualization. Advancing the efforts further, SDG&E used OSIsoft Cloud Services to gain additional value from the data by sharing it with internal and external communities from EOC-Emergency Operations Center for system sustainability during critical events, i.e. wildfire, outages or PSPS-public safety power shutoffs, etc.
